Nurturing a Greener Future: Bassi Bogetaorio Tree Nursery Driving Climate Action in Kisii County.

In the rolling green hills of Kisii, hope for a sustainable future is taking root. Thanks to support from the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) grant, a thriving tree nursery has been established in Bassi Bogetaorio Ward. This initiative is nurturing a wide variety of tree species vital for environmental restoration, biodiversity conservation, and community resilience

The nursery hosts an impressive collection of trees, including indigenous species such as Prunus Africana (African Cherry), Olea Capensis (African Olive), Acacia Abyssinica, and Podocarpus, alongside exotics like Pinus Patula and Casuarina. Essential fruit trees such as mango, Avocado, Passion Fruit and orange are also part of the collection, offering both ecological and economic value.

Benefits to Kenya’s Climate Agenda.

  • Carbon Sequestration – Once planted and matured, the seedlings will serve as powerful carbon sinks, helping Kenya reduce greenhouse gas emissions and move closer to its national target of increased tree cover.
  • Ecosystem Restoration and Biodiversity – The focus on indigenous species helps restore degraded landscapes and strengthens Kisii’s ecological resilience to climate change.
  • Community Empowerment and Sustainable Livelihoods – The recent handover of the nursery to a registered Community-Based Organization (CBO) ensures long-term sustainability through local ownership. The CBO will manage seedling distribution, build skills in nursery management, and potentially create value chains such as fruit production, boosting incomes and food security.
  • Climate Change Adaptation – By promoting diverse species, including fruit trees, the nursery supports agroforestry practices that enrich soil fertility, diversify livelihoods, and improve resilience against erratic weather patterns.

A Beacon of Locally-Led Action

The Bassi Bogetaorio tree nursery stands as a testament to the power of community collaboration in tackling climate change. More than just a source of seedlings, it represents a vision of sustainability, resilience, and hope. With continued community commitment, this nursery will grow into a cornerstone of Kisii County’s climate resilience and make a meaningful contribution to Kenya’s green future.
