“Cleanup of Nyakomisaro River on World Environment Day.”

The Directorate of Climate Change, in partnership with key stakeholders including USAID, the Water Resources Users Association (WRUA), and the Directorate of Environment, and Water, during world environmental day 2023 did a cleanup of river Nyakomisaro. This initiative was critical not only for the immediate environment but also for the communities and ecosystems downstream.

The cleanup of Nyakomisaro River and its surroundings is a powerful example of how local actions can significantly impact the broader fight against climate change. The importance of such efforts cannot be overstated, as they directly contribute to the health of our environment and the well-being of our communities.

In this context, the Directorate of Climate Change, in partnership with key stakeholders such as USAID, the Water Resources Users Association (WRUA), NEMA, students from local learning institutions, and the Directorate of Environment and Water, organized a cleanup of Nyakomisaro River in preparation of World Environment Day 2023. This initiative is critical not only for the immediate environment but also for the communities and ecosystems downstream.

Although the river is not a direct source of drinking water for the local population, it plays a crucial role in sustaining the health of domestic animals, which depend on it for water. By cleaning the river, we are protecting livestock from exposure to contaminated water, which in turn safeguards the livelihoods of the people who rely on these animals. Additionally, the Nyakomisaro River flows into Lake Victoria, a key water body that supports aquatic life and local fisheries.

The cleanup helps reduce the amount of waste, chemicals, and pollutants that would otherwise flow into Lake Victoria, where they could harm aquatic ecosystems and threaten fish populations. Protecting the health of Lake Victoria is essential not only for biodiversity but also for the thousands of people who depend on the lake for fishing, food, and income.

By restoring the river’s health, we are contributing to the larger goal of preserving natural ecosystems, protecting food security, and building climate resilience across the region.
