On August 14, 2024, the Kisii County Climate Change Directorate, in partnership with the Hatua Sasa Network, brought together members from three vital ward climate change committees—Nyatieko, Boochi Tendere, and Boochi Borabu—to the Kisii Agricultural Training Centre (ATC). The goal was to equip these grassroots champions with the knowledge and skills needed to combat climate change in their communities by understanding on the impacts of climate change on Kenya’s economy.
The workshop began with an inspiring keynote from the Minister for Climate Change. Her speech underscored the importance of continuous education and capacity building of all climate change committees. She shared a vision for a resilient Kisii, where climate champions in every ward lead efforts to protect their environment and livelihoods.
The minister emphasized the county’s commitment to ongoing support, promising to organize further workshops as resources allowed. She addressed the Hatua Sasa Network directly, asking them to consider returning to Kisii to train additional committees, given the vast need across the 40+ wards. This call to action was met with enthusiastic nods from participants, ready to serve as proactive agents of change in their communities.
As the day progressed, the initial objective of the workshop blossomed into a shared sense of purpose. Finally at the end of the session the participants left not only with new skills but with renewed motivation to make a tangible difference in their communities. With the backing of the Kisii County Climate Change Directorate, Hatua Sasa Network, and, above all, the support of their communities, these ward committees were ready to lead the way in tackling climate challenges for a sustainable future.
