As part of our continuous efforts to mitigate climate change impacts and safeguard natural resources, our team from the Directorate of Climate Change, Environment and Water on 29th October 2024 conducted inspection of several springs in Bogusero Ward. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the area Member of County Assembly, Hon. Vincent Abuga aimed to assess the condition of the springs and address the risks posed to the community and the ecosystem.
During the visit, we identified that some of the springs needs to be worked on urgently because they have served the community for decades and they are in critical condition. A spring like Riakiboma remains exposed, posing health risks and being vulnerable to contamination from upstream farming activities, including potential runoff from farm chemicals. The lack of proper safeguarding structures around these springs jeopardizes the safety of the local water supply.
Hon. Vincent Abuga recognizing the immediate need for intervention addressed the gathered residents of Kaminiambo where the spring is located, Mweshimiwa suggested to the resident that in order to safeguard the spring the residents should remove all the eucalyptus trees planted near the water source like riakiboma spring. He explained that eucalyptus trees, known for their high water uptake, significantly drain water from the springs, posing a threat to their stability and longevity. By removing these trees, the community could enhance water conservation efforts and reduce the risk of spring depletion.
As a directorate of Climate Change we are also committed to working with local leaders, residents, and stakeholders to design and implement protective measures around all selected springs within Kisii County Government. These may include installing barriers, promoting organic farming techniques, and developing upstream buffer zones to reduce contamination risks. By strengthening the protection of natural resources like these springs, we contribute to both local and global climate adaptation goals, ensuring a safer, more sustainable future for all.
