As part of our ongoing efforts to safeguard the environment and promote sustainable water resource management, the Directorate of Climate Change has successfully restored and protected springs across the county. This initiative is aimed at ensuring the availability of clean and safe water for communities while preserving vital ecosystems.
One of the major activities undertaken during this project was the removal of eucalyptus trees near the springs. While these trees are widely grown for their economic benefits, they have deep root systems that absorb excessive amounts of groundwater, leading to the drying up of springs. By eliminating these trees from the vicinity of the springs, we have helped improve water retention and ensured a continuous flow of fresh water.
Additionally, the directorate conducted extensive rehabilitation of dilapidated springs. Many of these water sources were exposed to contamination due to open access and the presence of chemicals from upstream farms. The restoration works included the demolition of deteriorated structures and the construction of new protective enclosures. To enhance accessibility, stairs were installed also,
Another crucial aspect of the project was the fencing of the springs. Unrestricted access had previously allowed livestock to trample and contaminate these water sources. By installing protective fences, we have ensured that the water remains clean, protected and unpolluted, benefiting both the environment and the communities that rely on these springs for daily use.
The rehabilitation of these springs goes beyond just providing clean water; it is a significant step toward environmental conservation. Springs serve as key water sources for many communities in Kisii, and their degradation poses a serious risk to both human and ecosystem health. By safeguarding these vital resources, we are:
- Preventing water contamination from agricultural chemicals and livestock waste.
- Enhancing groundwater recharge, ensuring a stable water supply even during dry seasons.
- Promoting sustainable water management for future generations.
Through these efforts, the Directorate of Climate Change remains committed to environmental protection and climate resilience. We appreciate the support from local communities and stakeholders in ensuring the long-term sustainability of these water sources. Together, we can build a greener and more water-secure future!
