The ongoing construction and development of the Kisii County Creamery marks an important step towards strengthening the dairy value chain, supporting local farmers, and improving nutrition among young learners. Once completed and operational, the facility is expected to provide a modern centre for milk processing, pasteurisation, and packaging, adding value to locally produced milk while promoting high standards of hygiene, safety, and quality.
The project reflects the County Government of Kisii’s commitment to promoting agricultural development, creating economic opportunities, and investing in the health and well-being of its residents.
Nourishing the Next Generation
One of the key objectives of the County Creamery is to support early childhood nutrition by providing safe, nutritious, and locally processed milk to pre-primary school learners in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) centres across Kisii County.
Upon becoming operational, the facility is expected to strengthen the county’s efforts to improve access to nutritious milk, support healthy growth and development, and create a more supportive learning environment for young children.
By linking local dairy production with early childhood development, the initiative seeks to deliver both nutritional and economic benefits to communities across the county.
Empowering Dairy Farmers and Strengthening Local Economies
Beyond its anticipated contribution to childhood nutrition, the County Creamery is expected to create new opportunities for dairy farmers and other players in the agricultural value chain. The project is designed to address key challenges facing the dairy sector while promoting sustainable local economic development.
Reducing Post-Harvest Losses: The creamery is expected to provide a more reliable market for raw milk, helping farmers reduce spoilage, minimise losses, and improve returns from dairy farming.
Promoting Dairy Value Addition: Through milk processing, pasteurisation, and packaging, the facility will create opportunities to increase the value of locally produced milk and encourage farmers to improve production and dairy management practices.
Creating Employment Opportunities: Once operational, the creamery is expected to support job creation within milk processing and related activities, including milk collection, transportation, distribution, packaging, and marketing.
Stimulating Local Economic Growth: By connecting dairy farmers to a structured market and supporting local milk processing, the project is expected to strengthen linkages between agriculture, enterprise development, and public service delivery.
Building a Sustainable Future for Kisii County
The Kisii County Creamery represents an investment in the county’s agricultural potential and the well-being of its people. By establishing a local milk value-addition facility and creating a link between dairy farmers and ECDE centres, the project seeks to build a more integrated and sustainable dairy value chain.
As implementation continues towards completion and operationalisation, the anticipated benefits include improved market access for farmers, reduced milk losses, new employment opportunities, and better access to nutritious milk for young learners.
Through this initiative, the County Government of Kisii is laying the foundation for a future in which local agricultural production supports childhood nutrition, strengthens household livelihoods, and contributes to inclusive economic growth across the county.
